Former Vice President and New Patriotic Party (NPP) flagbearer hopeful, Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia, has dismissed allegations that he performed poorly in Zongo communities during the 2024 general elections, describing the allegations as baseless propaganda.
Speaking at a party gathering in the Asokwa constituency of the Ashanti Region on Wednesday, September 10, Dr. Bawumia said narratives suggesting that Muslims and Zongo voters abandoned him in the last election were not supported by evidence.
“The propaganda out there is that Muslims and the Zongo people did not cast their votes for Dr. Bawumia. When I heard it, I asked: Where is the data to back these claims? Because for me, if you tell me something, I need data to prove whether it’s true,” he said.
He described as particularly misleading claims by one presidential aspirant that he won only a single polling station in all Zongo communities nationwide.
“Recently, one presidential aspirant claimed that in the Zongos, Dr. Bawumia won only one polling station in the entire country.
"He said that the only Zongo polling station I won was at Effutu. When we checked, that same presidential aspirant, I won at his own Zongo polling station,” Dr. Bawumia said.
Citing election data, he insisted his performance in Zongo communities had improved compared to 2020.
“In the Zongos, we garnered more votes in 2024 than we did in the 2020 elections. In the Ashanti Region as well, we increased our votes, even though we did not win many constituencies,” he explained.
Dr. Bawumia said such propaganda was designed to weaken his image but would not succeed.
"People talk without data to back it because they want to gossip. But if you bring that gossip to my side, I will confront you with data, and I will stop it,” he stressed.
The remarks come as internal campaigns intensify ahead of the NPP’s 2026 flagbearer race, where Dr Bawumia is among the leading contenders.
