President John Evans Atta Mills, Saturday, led a number of presidential staffers to sweep the Osu Christianborg Castle in Accra.
He did not only grab a broom to sweep, but collected and disposed of the refuse.
The cleanup exercise was done in honour of the celebrated South African statesman and anti-apartheid activist, Nelson Mandela, who turned 91 July 18, 2009.
The day also marks Mr Mandela’s work as a humanitarian. As part of the activities marking the day, the Nelson Mandela Foundation and 46664 urged his supporters and fans around the globe to spend 67 minutes to do charity work.
Mahama Ayariga, Presidential Spokesman, told Joy News that the president commemorated the day because of the high regard he has for Mr Mandela for the sacrifices he made to liberate South Africa from the brutal apartheid rule.
“The president took a broom and swept; and collected the garbage himself.
The Chief of Staff, the Secretary and all of us where there; we helped to sweep the Castle garden close to where we held the reception for President Obama.”
The president later addressed the media where he urged Ghanaians to do something in recognition of the 67 years of Nelson Mandela as a human rights activist and other accomplishments including the fight against HIV/AIDS.
Some fans of Mr Mandela in Ghana also observed the Day.
