A devastating mining pit collapse at Kasotie in the Atwima Mponua District of the Ashanti Region has claimed at least five lives, leaving several others injured.
The incident occurred on October 1, 2025, at about 4:30 p.m., when an abandoned mining pit caved in, trapping between 16 and 20 people engaged in illegal mining operations.
As of 7:30 a.m. on Thursday, October 2, five bodies had been recovered, while four survivors were rescued in critical condition.
The Nkawie Divisional Police have since conveyed the bodies to the Nyinahini Mortuary for identification and further directives.
This tragic incident underscores the dangers of illegal mining, commonly known as galamsey, which continues to be a persistent issue in Ghana.
Community members are calling for urgent measures to reclaim abandoned mining sites to prevent further tragedies.
There is growing public agitation for the government and relevant authorities to take decisive action against galamsey and safeguard the country’s environment.
