Head coach of the Black Stars, Otto Addo, says selection into the national team should be based solely on performance and quality rather than where a player plies their trade.
Ghana secured qualification for a fifth FIFA World Cup appearance after defeating Comoros 1-0 at the Accra Sports Stadium on Sunday, October 12, in their final qualifying match. The tournament will be hosted across Canada, Mexico, and the USA next year.
In recent days, discussions have intensified around players eligible to switch nationality to represent Ghana, sparking debate over the inclusion of local-based talents.
Speaking to Joy Sports, Otto Addo reiterated that the national team belongs to everyone and that only merit will determine who earns a place in the squad.
“I don’t think we should look at who is local and who is not,” he said.
“We have to look at performance. We have to look at the best players. The higher the quality of the group, the higher the players push each other.”
The Black Stars boss emphasized that competition and unity within the team are key to Ghana’s success on the global stage.
