Minister of Education, Haruna Iddrisu says he has instructed the Ghana Education Service (GES) to ensure full implementation of mother-tongue instruction across all schools in the country.
“I have directed the Director-General of the GES to make the use of mother-tongue instruction mandatory in all Ghanaian schools,” he said, adding that the policy forms part of President Mahama’s broader educational reset agenda.
He was speaking at the launch of the Free Tertiary Education Programme for Persons Living with Disabilities, and explained that the directive aligns with ongoing reforms in the education sector aimed at strengthening the use of indigenous languages in teaching and learning.
Mr Iddrisu emphasised that the initiative is designed to improve understanding and learning outcomes, particularly at the basic level, by encouraging teachers to adopt local languages as the medium of instruction.
