The General Secretary of the opposition New Patriotic Party (NPP), Justin Kodua, has criticised members of the governing National Democratic Congress (NDC) accused of involvement in illegal mining activities, otherwise called galamsey.
He alleged that key figures within the ruling party are deeply involved in perpetuating the crisis.
Addressing journalists at a press conference on Wednesday, November 5, in Accra, Mr Kodua claimed that, "On the galamsey fight, the jury is out there, and it is very clear to the people of Ghana that the real galamseyers and enablers of galamsey are in the NDC."
"From their Members of Parliament to party executives from national to branch levels, they have taken over almost all the galamsey sites in the country and are mining so irresponsibly and with impunity," he added.
He also lamented the recent attack on officers of the National Anti-Illegal Mining Operations Secretariat (NAIMOS), saying, "They even have the courage and effrontery to attack military personnel in uniform for daring to stop them. That is the state we are in the galamsey fight."
On Saturday, November 1, two NDC Members of Parliament were allegedly involved in an attack on officials of the NAIMOS.
Mr Kodua emphasised that the NPP is ready to support the government in the fight, "We in the NPP duly acknowledge the existential threats posed by the worsening galamsey situation and are willing and ready to cooperate with the government to fight the menace."
"The NPP is a responsible opposition, and we are ready to assist in tackling this generational crisis for the love of country," he added.
