Investigative journalist Erastus Asare Donkor has called on the Ghanaian media to actively take a stand in the fight against illegal mining, popularly known as galamsey.
Speaking at CDD-Ghana’s 20th Kronti Ne Akwamu lecture, he urged the media to be fair in its reportage of the canker but not be neutral.
"The media should be fair but cannot be neutral in the galamsey fight. We must take a stand to fight for an end to this cancer."
Additionally, he urged media houses to dedicate airtime and editorial space to educational programmes on galamsey, emphasising that sustained media engagement is crucial in raising awareness and combating illegal mining across the country.
He further noted that, many of the communities hardest hit by illegal mining "lack the voice or courage to speak publicly due to political intimidation, limited access to media platforms, or fear of reprisals from powerful actors who profit from galamsey."
"We should be able to provide a platform for these communities, environmental activists, and whistleblowers to speak out. Just as the CDD has done today," he added.
