The Ministry for the Interior has announced a curfew in the Nalerigu Township and its surrounding areas in the North East Region.
In a statement posted on its official Facebook page, the ministry said the decision was taken by the Minister for the Interior “on the advice of the National Security Council and by Executive Instrument.”
The curfew, which will run from 5:00 pm to 6:00 am, takes effect on Thursday, December 18.
“The Minister for the Interior, on the advice of the National Security Council, has imposed a curfew on Nalerigu Township and its environs,” the statement said, adding that the measure is intended to help restore calm and ensure public safety.
The government has appealed to traditional authorities and residents to remain calm and cooperate with security agencies.
“Government urges chiefs, elders, opinion leaders, youth and people of the area to exercise restraint in the face of the challenges confronting them and to use non-violent means to channel their energies into ensuring peace in the area,” the ministry added.
As part of the security measures, a total ban has been placed on the possession of arms, ammunition, and any offensive weapons within the affected areas.
The ministry warned that “any persons found with any arms or ammunition will be arrested and prosecuted.”
Additional restrictions include a ban on the movement of motorbikes, the wearing of smocks, the sale of fuel in containers, and all forms of unlawful assembly.
