Nana Agyei Baffour Awuah, Member of Parliament for Manhyia South and Vice Chair of Parliament’s Subsidiary Legislation Committee, has urged caution on proposed amendments to Ghana’s Constitution, warning that hasty decisions could have far-reaching consequences for the country.
Speaking on the AM Show, he called on President John Dramani Mahama to take his time in reviewing the proposals before forwarding them to an implementation committee.
“A constitution which even the founding president, upon the expiration of his term, decided to step down and not insist on continuing… the president should take his time.
He should not be rushed,” Mr Awuah said, noting that the process could be a “make or break situation for this country.”
The comments come in the wake of the Prof. H.K.P. Committee report, which recommends amending Article 66(1) of the 1992 Constitution to extend the presidential term from four to five years.
The report also proposes changes to Article 290 to remove the entrenched status of Article 66(1), which currently forms part of the constitution’s entrenched provisions under Chapter 8 on the Executive.
Mr Awuah stressed that any constitutional review should focus on longstanding challenges rather than rushed reforms.
He encouraged the President to carefully consider the implications, issue a white paper if necessary, and ensure thorough consultation before sending the proposals to a working or implementation committee.
The discussion touches on broader debates about governance and constitutional reform in Ghana, as stakeholders weigh the need for change against the importance of preserving democratic safeguards and the integrity of entrenched constitutional provisions.
