The Member of Parliament for Ayensuano, Ida Adwoa Asiedu, has rejected claims that she is being ungrateful for supporting former Vice President Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia in the New Patriotic Party’s (NPP) presidential race, despite receiving assistance from Abetifi MP Dr. Bryan Acheampong during her own election.
Speaking on Adom FM’s Dwaso Nsem, the lawmaker said her decision is based on conviction, not obligation, emphasizing that gratitude should not be confused with political choice.
“I am not ungrateful, and I will never be,” she said. “Before God, Bryan Acheampong supported me during my election. But a choice is a choice.”
She explained that the support she received was never transactional. “We were all in a team supporting a candidate. I was never told that because someone helped me, I must support him when he decides to contest,” she noted.
Miss Asiedu added that the public often overlooks the broader picture of campaign financing. Beyond Dr. Acheampong, she said Dr. Bawumia, whom she is now backing, and former Assin Central MP Kennedy Ohene Agyapong also contributed significantly to her political journey.
“People also don’t know the kind of support I had from the person I am supporting. Kennedy Agyapong also helped me,” she explained.
She stressed that political campaigns are rarely funded by a single individual, and support typically comes from multiple sources. “Politics is not one person’s funding. Support comes from many places. I can’t sit here and list what each person did, but they all helped in diverse ways,” she said.
The MP urged critics to refrain from passing judgment without understanding the facts. “If people don’t understand the issues, they should stop talking. I don’t know their definition of ungratefulness, but I am not,” she added.
Miss Asiedu said she has largely ignored the accusations but felt compelled to clarify that her support for Dr. Bawumia is a personal and political decision, not a rejection of those who once assisted her.
