Former Board Chairman of the Ghana Airports Company Limited (GACL), Paul Adom-Otchere, has offered his perspective on the New Patriotic Party’s (NPP) internal election following Dr Mahamudu Bawumia’s emergence as the party’s flagbearer.
Speaking on JoyNews’ Newsfile programme on Saturday, February 7, Mr. Adom-Otchere reflected on the voting results and what they reveal about support patterns and factional dynamics within the party.
“I was really hoping that Dr Bawumia would repeat the 60% he achieved previously, but when I looked at the results, I noticed that he had won places that he didn’t win before,” he said. “And it is always important how the party sees him.”
Adom-Otchere noted particular interest in the Ashanti Region, a long-standing stronghold for the NPP. “In Ashanti, which is what I was interested in, it looked like the spread was wider — the longitude didn’t go up, but it spread,” he explained, suggesting that Dr Bawumia’s support may have broadened geographically even if the overall percentage did not rise substantially.
He further highlighted trends in his own constituency areas of Labadi and Teshie, where Dr Bawumia reportedly increased his share of support.
“When I saw that, I thought, well, that’s not too bad,” he remarked.
The former GACL chairman’s analysis comes amid reports of deep factional tensions within the NPP following Dr Bawumia’s election as flagbearer.
