The introduction of 5G technology in Ghana is expected to unlock specialised industrial applications, particularly within the mining and agricultural sectors, according to Edmund Yirenkyi Fianko, Director-General of the National Communications Authority (NCA).
The high-speed, high-capacity network, he said, will make services possible that are currently beyond reach.
Speaking on Channel One TV on Monday, March 9, Ing. Fianko noted, “For 5G, there are use cases for industries. We expect deployments in the mining sector and in agriculture. Services that are not possible today will become possible because of the speeds and high capacity that 5G will deliver.” He explained that these applications could transform operational efficiency and innovation across key sectors.
Ing. Fianko further revealed that the upcoming licensing framework for telecom operators will include strict rollout obligations to ensure nationwide coverage.
“We will start with district-level deployment. By the third year, operators must cover all districts, and by the fifth year, constituencies and communities will also be served,” he stated, emphasising the NCA’s commitment to inclusive access.
Meanwhile, the Minister for Communication, Digital Technology and Innovations, Samuel Nartey George, confirmed that the Cabinet has approved the removal of the exclusivity clause under the previous wholesale 5G framework.
This decision paves the way for a new competitive spectrum auction, which is intended to encourage greater participation from industry players in rolling out 5G services across the country.
