Sulemana Braimah, Executive Director of the Media Foundation for West Africa, has criticised what he described as years of resource mismanagement under both the former New Patriotic Party (NPP) administration and the current National Democratic Congress (NDC) government.
Speaking on Joy FM's Super Morning Show on Monday, March 16, when discussing the use of Ibrahim Mahama's private jet for state trips by President John Mahama, Mr Braimah argued that if the wastage had been curtailed, the state would have been in a position to purchase a decent presidential jet without resorting to using private aircraft.
"I think it's time for us to say, look, for certain things, let us be honest with ourselves, we are at a point where as a country we don't have uh an aircraft that is airworthy enough to guarantee the safety of the president's travel. And we've gotten to a point where we should be able to procure one for the state,"
"Look, the waste, the waste, even under this government, the waste that is happening, if half of it is cut till, we can easily buy a decent aircraft for the state," he said.
"So, it's about how we manage our resources, but otherwise, I would say, look, enough of the politics," Mr Braimah added.
President Mahama, during his recent official trips, used the newly acquired private jet of his brother, Ibrahim Mahama, a prominent Ghanaian business mogul.
The development has since sparked public debate over why the President would forgo the state’s presidential jet in favour of a private aircraft.
In response, the Minister for Government Communications, Felix Kwakye Fosu, stated that the jet is provided by the President’s brother free of charge, with the state responsible only for fuelling it.
