Police in Accra have arrested one George Aryitey, 27, a man they say is a most wanted criminal at his hideout at Achimota in Accra, in one of three crime incidents Wednesday.
According to Accra Police Regional Commander, Rose Bio Atinga, Aryitey had been on the police search list after he escaped arrest six weeks ago when he and others robbed a Sri Lankan of a laptop and an amount of $11,000.
The Regional Commander said on that occasion, Aryittey and his gang exchanged fire with the police and he eventually escaped after being shot in the palm. A police officer was also hit in the hand.
A KIA taxi cab with registration number GN 6813 Y used for the robbery was however intercepted.
Rose Bio said the suspect was involved in several other robberies around Achimota and Dome and had been on the police radar.
He was however arrested today at his hotel base in Achimota upon a tip-off. Four new revolvers and a bread knife were retrieved.
Interestingly, Aryitey’s parents who feigned victims of robbery in an attempt to retrieve the impounded taxi, have been arrested and granted bail. They face charges of aiding and abetting crime.
They had reported to the Police at Kwabenya in Accra that they were attacked by armed robbers who seized their car, (the same KIA taxi cab GN 6813 Y), unaware the impounded car had been towed to the Accra Central Police Station.
It was when the Kwabenya Police asked them to lead the police to the spot of the attack that they confessed Ayitey was their son.
In a separate robbery incident, two suspected armed robbers perished Wednesday while two others escaped after they engaged the police in a shootout.
They had allegedly broken into a house at Nmai Djorn at Sowutuom near Accra.
Rose Atinga said a police patrol team was dispatched to the area after victims made a distress call to police at 2:00am.
She said on reaching the house, the robbers opened fire on the police, and the police returned fire.
Three of the robbers escaped with gunshot wounds but the fourth died on the spot. The police later traced and arrested one of the three escaping robbers but died later at the police station.
One pump action gun, catridges, and other deadly weapons were retrieved.
And in yet another incident, police rescued one Kwami Moses, who had been set upon by angry residents of Dansoman and given a severe thrashing on suspicion of being an armed robber.
Apparently Kwami was being dispatched to the land of his ancestors when police chanced upon him. He bore a broken, swollen left hand that freely oozed blood while his knees bore several deep cuts ostensibly from a sharp cutlass.
Police could not immediately tell what his crime was.
Kwami however maintained he was no criminal but a 'stone cracker' who was on his way to work.
A large crowd had gathered at the Accra Central Police Station to observe the suspects.
