The Chamber of LPG Marketing Companies (COMAC) has warned the National Petroleum Authority (NPA) and government officials that Liquified Petroleum Gas (LPG) deliveries from Atuabo may be suspended unless urgent action is taken to close a nearly GH¢1.00/kg price gap with Tema-based suppliers.
In a letter directed to the NPA, the Chief Executive Officer (CEO) of COMAC, Dr. Riverson Oppong highlighted that “Sage Petroleum (Atuabo) is currently selling LPG at GH¢12.65/kg,” far above competitors in Tema, including Alpha (GH¢11.66/kg), Matrix (GH¢11.65/kg), and FuelTrade (GHS 11.66/kg).”
The letter described the disparity as “not a marginal difference — it is a structural disadvantage that erodes the viability of Atuabo-zone operations.”
COMAC has called on the NPA to take immediate corrective action, recommending two options:
Price Alignment: “Direct Sage Petroleum to price its LPG in line with Tema-based suppliers, eliminating the unfair burden on Atuabo-zone LPG marketers.”
Zonal Flexibility: “If Sage Petroleum refuses to align its pricing, we request the lifting of the zonalization restrictions to allow LPG marketers to load from Tema into the Atuabo zone, restoring competitive access.”
The letter makes the consequences clear: “Continuing to absorb losses is no longer sustainable. Trucks may be grounded, and deliveries suspended after the holiday period.”
In a move to ensure government oversight, the letter was copied to the Minister, Ministry of Energy & Green Transition; the Chief Executive Officer, Sage Petroleum Limited; the Chief Executive Officer, Ghana National Gas Company Limited; and all CEOs/MDs of LPG Marketing Companies (LPGMCs) and Oil Marketing Companies (OMCs).”
The letter underscores a growing tension in Ghana’s LPG sector, with COMAC emphasizing that “immediate regulatory action is required” to uphold market fairness, protect consumers, and preserve the integrity of the LPG supply chain.
The NPA has yet to respond, leaving the Atuabo LPG market on edge as COMAC pushes for urgent intervention.
