The government is planning to establish more Community Day Senior High Schools (SHSs) in selected peri-urban communities as part of efforts to expand access to secondary education.
Minister for Education Haruna Iddrisu disclosed this during the Government Accountability Series in Accra on Monday, July 20, saying the initiative is being supported by the $300 million Transformative Secondary Education for Access, Results and Relevance for Jobs (STARR-J) Project.
In June 2026, the World Bank approved IDA financing of US$300 million for the STARR-J Project, which will expand access to quality secondary education and equip more young people with the basic knowledge and skills necessary to transition to higher education and enter the labour market.
The minister said President John Dramani Mahama has consistently advocated for the expansion of Community Day Senior High Schools to bring quality secondary education closer to communities.
Mr Iddrisu revealed that the government is considering the construction of new Community Day SHSs in areas including Nima, Ayawaso and Kasoa.
According to him, the new schools will be modelled after the Dome-Kwabenya Community Day Senior High School, which was established to provide more opportunities for students within its catchment area.
"It is the view of President Mahama that we should encourage the establishment of community day care schools in the category of what is in Kwabenya. So we will build one of those in Nima, Ayawaso, and one in Kasoa as part of the STARR-J Project," he said.
He explained that the move forms part of the government's broader strategy to address infrastructure gaps in the second-cycle education sector, improve access, and support the sustainability of the Free Senior High School programme.
