The Executive Director of the Ghana National Council of Private Schools (GNACOPS), Obenfo Nana Kwasi Gyetuah, says private schools will not submit evidence of alleged discrepancies in the 2026 Basic Education Certificate Examination (BECE) results directly to the West African Examinations Council (WAEC).
He explained that the evidence would instead be presented to an independent body if one is established to investigate the concerns raised by private schools.
Speaking on Adom FM’s Dwaso Nsem,on August 10, Obenfo Gyetuah rejected calls for private schools to provide their evidence directly to WAEC, arguing that the examination body is itself at the centre of the concerns.
“Nobody has said we don’t have basis or evidence. We’re saying we will not give it to WAEC. Why should we give it to WAEC?” he asked.
He said the private schools would release the evidence only as part of an independent investigation, where the process would be separate from WAEC.
“So nobody should be there demanding evidence because it is not in the media that we will present those evidence,” he said.
“That is why we’re requesting for the independent body to be established for whatever discussion there is to be held. If we know we are investigating the work of WAEC, then we bring the evidence,” he added.
His comments follow concerns raised by GNACOPS and some private schools over the 2026 BECE results, with the group alleging discrepancies in the performance of candidates from private schools.
GNACOPS has petitioned the Ministry of Education over the matter and called for an independent investigation to establish whether the concerns raised are justified.
The development has triggered a wider debate, with some education stakeholders urging private schools to provide concrete evidence to support their allegations.
The Head of Public Affairs at WAEC, John Kapi, has also rejected suggestions that the Council deliberately targeted private schools, insisting that the allegations must be supported by evidence.
Mr Kapi said WAEC had no reason to target private schools and noted that some staff of the Council also have children attending private schools.
However, Obenfo Gyetuah questioned why WAEC was demanding evidence while, according to him, the Council had not made available the examination scripts needed to independently assess the concerns.
“Mr Kapi is saying he is embarking on an assessment, and he hasn’t seen any script from the private schools. Why are they also refusing to release the scripts of the students?” he asked.
He said the issue should be handled carefully by all sides rather than turning it into a public confrontation.
“So let’s all be quiet, because how do you expect me to bring the evidence to the same body we have an issue with?” he said.
GNACOPS maintains that an independent investigation would provide a more credible platform for examining the alleged discrepancies and determining whether there were any irregularities in the 2026 BECE results.
The group is therefore insisting that any evidence supporting its concerns should be presented to an independent body rather than to WAEC itself.
