The Attorney General’s Department has served notice it would be heading to the Supreme Court to challenge the ruling of the Appeals Court which upheld the appeal of Kwabena Amaning, alias Tagor, and Alhaji Issah Abass against their conviction on drug charges.The two were convicted in November 2007 and sentenced to 15-year jail term each but were set free Friday by the Court of Appeal led by Justice Peasare. The appeal court ruled that no sufficient evidence was adduced during the trial to prove their guilt. The Appeals Court therefore quashed the earlier ruling and discharged the two.However, the Deputy Attorney General, Mr. Barton Oduro, later announced on Asempa FM’s Ekosii Sen programme that the AG’s Department is not satisfied with the ruling and may appeal against the decision at the Supreme Court.He said the A-G’s department would be debriefing its team of attorneys that represented the state at the court and take a firm decision.Mr. Oduro intimated that the NDC administration inherited the Tagor case and, therefore, might have to study the details further to challenge the Appeal Court decision at the Supreme Court.Tagor together with Issah Abass were charged in 2007 for illegally possessing and dealing in drugs following the disappearance of 76 parcels of cocaine contained in the now (in)famous MV Benjamin vessel.After protracted court proceedings, the two were found guilty of the offence and jailed accordingly.Source: Asempa FM/Ghana
