The proportion of Basic Education Certificate Examination (BECE) candidates automatically placed into senior high schools has hit its highest level since at least 2021, according to placement data from the Computerised School Selection and Placement System (CSSPS).
Of the 604,567 candidates who qualified for placement in 2026, 527,932 or 87.32%, were automatically placed, up from 81.96% in 2025 and well above the 66.23% recorded in 2021, the first year covered by the data.
The figures also show a steady decline in the number of candidates requiring self-placement, typically those who did not secure automatic entry into any of their selected schools and had to apply separately.
As of the close of Thursday, 10th September, just 53,887 candidates, or 8.91% of those qualified, had registered for self-placement in 2026, down sharply from 187,542 candidates (33.77%) in 2021, though registration for 2026 was still open at the time of this count and continued into Friday, 11th September, so this figure is expected to rise before the exercise closes.
The numbers, year by year
CSSPS data covering six placement cycles show the following breakdown of registered candidates, qualified candidates, and placement outcomes:

The data show a marked jump in the automatic placement rate between 2022 and 2023 from 69.24% to 81.56% — followed by three years in which the rate held broadly steady in the 81–82% range, before climbing again to this year's 87.32%.
Over the same period, the number of candidates registering for the BECE has fluctuated only modestly, from 571,892 in 2021 to 623,072 in 2026, meaning the gains in automatic placement reflect genuine improvements in the placement process rather than simply a smaller applicant pool.
Where the trend graph goes

Why the self-placement pool is shrinking
Self-placement has traditionally served as a fallback route for candidates who were not automatically matched to any of the schools on their selection list, requiring them to apply directly for available slots after the main placement round. The steady shrinking of this group from roughly one in three qualified candidates in 2021 to under one in ten in 2026 so far suggests the CSSPS algorithm is increasingly able to match candidates to a school of their choice without manual intervention.
A smaller self-placement pool typically also means fewer families navigating the more uncertain, often more stressful process of securing a place outside the automated system, and potentially less last-minute congestion at placement centres in the weeks after results are released.
The bigger picture
The 2026 figures cap a six-year run in which automatic placement rates have climbed by more than 21 percentage points, from 66.23% in 2021 to 87.32% this year, a shift that CSSPS data suggests has meaningfully reduced the share of candidates left to navigate the placement system's manual fallback route.
With self-placement registration still running past the 10th September count used in this report, the final 2026 self-placement figure and the small residual balance still to be accounted for are likely to move slightly before the cycle is fully closed out.
