The Eastern Regional Women’s Organizer of the NDC, Evelyn Ama Korang, was allegedly beaten up by her own party people on Thursday pending the re-run of elections in the town.
This unfortunate incident took place Thursday afternoon after the Regional Minister, Samuel Ofosu-Ampofo who doubles as the National Organizer of the ruling party, together with the women’s organizer, led party faithfuls in a keep-fit march through the Akwatia town to help bolster the chances of the party in tomorrow's re-run.
According to sources, the beating was pre-meditated and might have been because she had been ‘opposing’ the party’s Parliamentary candidate, Baba Jamal.
Sources said three people, namely David Dakudzi, the constituency youth organizer of the party, his assistant, James Effah and one other, Michael Quarshie in Baba's camp, intentionally went to the club house of the defunct Ghana Consolidated Diamond Company nd pretended to be holding a meeting at to map out a strategy for the re-run and thus invited the women’s organizer to be part.
When she got to the place, they made it plain to her that they were going to teach her a lesson for always 'opposing' Baba.
The three, allegedly led by the constituency youth organizer, 'disciplined' Madam Korang by delivering some 'hefty' blows on her body like a boxer practicing on a punching bag.
According to sources, the beating happened in the presence of Baba Jamal but he has already denied the allegation.
After escaping from her attackers, she went straight to the Akwatia Police Station and reported the incident upon which the three accused persons were picked up by the police.
They have subsequently been given bail pending further investigations.
The action of the three people has angered some party executives in the region especially the Regional Minister who is reported to have threatened to let the three be suspended from the party.
The regional executives say this incident will further affect Baba Jamal’s chances in tomorrow’s election.
Leader of the group, David Kudzu told Peace FM on Friday that the w omen's organizer whom they suspect to be an NPP informant, came to the meeting uninvited and that they were only trying to prevent her from being part of it.
According to him, she is just framing them up in the whole ‘saga’, meanwhile, Baba Jamal has described tomorrow’s re-run as “Yetow Afa” meaning “we are taking it by voting”.
He told party people that the voting is about Akwatia and the people should be prepared to vote for themselves.
He said they must consider the betterment of Akwatia, the future of GCD, the construction of a bridge to link the town to Kusi and the status of a new district for the constituency before they vote.
