The family of the late Salifu Ahmed Maikanka has advised individuals and groups particularly politicians to desist from drawing premature conclusions about the cause of the death of their deceased relative. The late Ahmed Maikanka was allegedly brutalised by the police on the night before his death but the family told the press Sunday that without the result of an autopsy, it might be misleading to jump to any conclusion about the cause of the death of Salifu Maikanka. In a statement signed by Alhaji Aminu Bawa and Alhaji Labaran Musah, Moshie Chiefs of Nsawam and Takoradi respectively, and read by Mallam Nuhu, a brother of the deceased at a press conference in Accra the family said "as far as we know as a family, the cause of the death is not known and we are not happy about conclusive statements being made by some persons and political parties about the cause of his death". The General Secretary of the NPP, Nana Ohene Ntow on Friday accused the Police of assaulting and brutalising the deceased which he said led to his death. He said the family was very much concerned about the politicisation of the death of Salifu Maikanka and the increasing media reports and public comments at a time when they were grieving. According to him, the family had had another opportunity to examine the body at the mortuary, stressing that "there were no wounds, scars or scratches that will lead us to conclude that these or that killed him". Mallam Nuhu stated that the family had been informed by the police that the body would be conveyed to the Korle-Bu Teaching Hospital for an independent autopsy to be conducted on it. He said they were anxiously waiting for that and would send a representative to join the team that would send the corpse to the Korle-Bu Teaching Hospital Monday. “We therefore, wish to take this opportunity to appeal to the Police Administration that we are desirous of completing the various processes early so that we can happily bury our beloved brother by end of the day tomorrow," Mallam Nuhu stated. The family also took exception to a front page publication of an Accra besed daily newspaper last Friday that showed a photograph of the deceased as he was being prepared for burial. "That is most unacceptable and we wish to register our strong disapproval of that development. It is our hope that the Ghana Journalists Association will sit up and advise its members against such acts," Alhaji Nuhu said. Source: Daily Graphic
