A 30-year-old bed-ridden man, Cobby Wilson, is demanding more compensation for injuries that have made it impossible for him to lead a normal life.
He was shot by a stray bullet from a police officer's gun which hit him in the spine while in a queue waiting for his turn at a food vendor’s joint.
As he narrated, he had a lot of ambitions to be a lieutenant in the Ghana Armed Forces and was resolved to reach this dream as a teenager until that fateful morning. Though doctors did their best, they could not help him.
According to Cobby, his mother was his only source of inspiration when he found himself in this situation, but she passed away as the stress of taking care of him had a toll on her.
“I didn’t see my mother’s body or her coffin because I can’t walk,” he said.
Although he has received compensation, his father said the financial compensation was woefully inadequate for his upkeep.
He said he had met the Attorney General to discuss "this whole issue with the police" and came to the conclusion that "they have to compensate my boy".
He said however that it took a very long time after the meeting before his lawyer informed him about a GHc2,500 (Twenty-five million old cedis) compensation package. He fears that there would be no one to take care of his son in his absence.
He is demanding more compensation from the police and is calling on the Commission on Human Rights and Administrative Justice to intervene.
