Research findings published by a group of students from Ashesi University may just be the surest solution to traffic congestion in Accra.
The study was to find out the quality of transportation in the city and how to streamline it to reduce traffic.
“The main point is restructuring, getting buses well arranged so that passengers find it easier getting onto the buses without crowding the place, forming their temporary lines…trying to make their ways to their destinations,” a member of the group said.
At the Kwame Nkrumah Circle in particular, the students are proposing that the bus terminal at the Odawna junction be moved.
Interestingly the bus terminal is so close to a traffic light that human traffic at the zebra crossing there also stalls the smooth flow of vehicles, further worsening the problem.
The proposal of the group is only one of a long list of suggestions designed by individuals and entities to arrest the perennial traffic jam at the business centre.
But generally in Accra, hawkers have also been cited as adding so much to traffic problems.
Although the Accra Metropolitan Authority (AMA) has tried to end the specter, the hawkers are refusing to leave the streets.
Recent checks revealed the street traders are smartly playing a “hide-and-seek” game with the metropolitan task forces, eclipsing possibilities of a complete solution to the problem.
