Some residents of Bawku in the Upper East Region have voluntarily started handing over their weapons to the police there.

The Bawku Municipal Security Council says this is a good sign and confirms residents’ commitment to lasting peace in the area.

A protracted chieftaincy dispute between the Kusasi’s and Mamprusi’s has claimed many lives and properties running into millions of cedis destroyed.

But as peace returns to the area, Bawku Municipal Chief Executive (MCE) Issahaku Buhari, has praised residents for turning in their weapons.

The MCE told Joy News’ Seth Kwame Boateng that the Ministry of Interior will soon out with a package to reward people who return their guns with money.

He said so far three people have returned their weapons.

A test conducted on the weapons by the police and military confirms that the weapons are indeed active.

The identities of the people who have returned their weapons, according to the MCE have been hidden.

A press conference will be organised to explain the processes residents can go through to return their weapons and a reward package announced as soon as it has been completed, he said.

He encouraged residents to contribute to the peace building process by returning their weapons.
