About 950 workers of Vodafone will by the middle of December formally cease to be part of the company.
This follows the commencement of the company’s compulsory retirement program which would see these number of workers part ways with the company.
Management on Wednesday began dispatching letters to the affected workers.
Under the compulsory retirement program, workers who are supposed to be laid off, by December must be given three months notice before they go home.
The Head of Corporate Affairs at Vodafone, Major Albert Don Chebi, tells Joy Business the company is now poised to remain competitive at the end of the whole program.
“The whole exercise is to ensure that the business provides value for its customers and also efficient services for its members,” he said.
But the Communication Workers Union which is the umbrella body for the Vodafone Workers’ Union says they are worried by this latest development.
General Secretary of the union, David Korley Clottey, said Vodafone erred because it failed to follow an agreement reached with the workers.
Mr Clottey said the union would take its concerns to the labour commission and the employment ministry to ensure the right thing is done.
