The Graduate Students Association of Ghana (GRASAG) has proposed that elections at tertiary institutions across the country should revert to the use of the ballot box.

According to them, the current electronic system has demerits that derail the electoral process.

The call by the association comes after presidential elections for the University of Ghana’s Student Representative Council (SRC) has been dogged by controversy.

One of the parties in the election dispute, Mikdad Mohammed, has filed a petition to contest the results of the just ended elections.

He is seeking the annulment of votes cast as he contends the process was fraught with electoral anomalies.

The Bureau of National Investigations (BNI) has said electoral database was compromised and is currently probing allegations of electoral fraud.

Speaking on 'CampusOnHitz' on Hitz FM, President of GRASAG Reginald Arthur explained that electronic voting is fraught with many challenges which do not allow for transparency and breeds mistrust.

He fears if the process is not reviewed, student elections could get worse.

“The electronic voting process is still questionable as it comes with many uncertainties. This is why we persuaded the graduate students to stick to the manual system of voting which has existed for many years", he said.

Meanwhile, renowned film producer and former student elections contender, Kofi Asamoah - who currently produces the popular Boys Kasa comedy skits - is worried student elections has become heavily influenced by partisan politics.

Even though he admits student elections cannot be devoid of partisan influence, he is calling for students to be allowed to campaign on ideas to help their compatriots and not to serve pure partisan interests.
