The Inspector General of Police has directed all district police commanders and heads of police stations to strictly adhere to the rules governing the management of police cells across the country.

Mohammed Alhassan gave the order, Wednesday after touring some police stations in Accra to assess the condition of the stations and especially the cells.

The unannounced visits follow a chain of cell-breaks that have hit the police administration in recent times.

Suspects in detention at the Tepa and Asiwa police stations in the Ashanti Region last month broke cells under very mysterious circumstances and are yet to be arrested.

Before that, seven of their counterparts in Denu in the Volta Region had also escaped. Five of them have since been rearrested.

Critics have partly blamed the poor conditions at the various police cells for the cell-breaks.

Independent checks by Joy FM's correspondents nationwide show a sad state of a deteriorated police cells.

This has forced the IGP to visit the police stations in Accra to see for himself what is going on and the state of police cells in Accra.

Superintendant Cephas Arthur who is with the Police Public Affairs Director and who is touring the various cells with the IGP said they have seen at first-hand what is happening at the various police station.

Speaking on the various cell breaks, Arthur said all police officers who were on duty at the time the incidents occurred are undergoing service enquiry.

"That is some of kind of internal disciplinary action. Some trial," he noted, adding his administration is working assiduously to ensure that all escapees in the various cell breaks scandals are arrested.
