The National Labour Commission (NLC) has directed the management of Vodafone to put its redundancy program on hold. According to the commission, Vodafone cannot go ahead to downsize its staff without a favourable agreement with the workers. This was the outcome of a meeting by the Labour Commission to resolve the impasse between the management of Vodafone and the Communication Workers Union. “Any action that has been contemplated with respect to the redundancy should be stayed until the commission makes a directive or a pronouncement on the matter,” explained Head of Public Affairs at the Labour Commission, Mr Mohammed Affum. While officials of Vodafone have scheduled meet with the union on the 24th of this month the commission seeks a briefing on the outcome the meeting on the 30th of September. Vodafone last month issued letters to some 950 workers who will go on a compulsory retirement from December but the workers say the action was improper prompting this afternoon’s intervention by the labour commission.
