Government is currently implementing measures that would improve the access of non-traditional exports (NTEs) to the international markets, especially the European market.
Though the global financial crisis had affected consuming power of most developed countries, the growth of NTEs since the beginning of the year had improved over last year’s performance mainly because of the continuous re-strategizing by the Ghana Export and Promotion Center (GEPC).
Speaking at a workshop for Small and Medium scale Enterprises (SMEs), Hannah Tetteh, the Minister of Trade and Industry said that incentives would be provided to exporters and producers to attract the needed investments into the sector and to boost export development.
Various incentives, she noted, were provided to lower the cost of export production and enhance their competitiveness on the international markets.
“The private sector is facing global competitiveness and we are committed to the public-private partnership. We would also offer support and implement the necessary measures in order to create the enabling environment for businesses to thrive and expand beyond our borders,” she added.
The workshop was jointly organized by the Center for the Promotion of Imports (CBI) and the International Trade Center (ITC), a technical cooperation agency of the United Nations.
CBI and ITC embarked on the initiative in 2006 to help strengthen of the technical agencies.
A symposium was also organized to provide participants with the opportunity to learn about export competitiveness.
Some GEPC’s staff and Ghanaian consultants participated in the demanding and practical training programme, which spanned from December 2008 to September 2009 and received certificates that qualified them to be advisers and associates.
They were also advised on the design and planning of competitive export strategies.
