The flagbearer of the New Patriotic Party has described the floods and the fire incident that claimed hundreds of lives as a major tragedy for Accra.
The capital was completely submerged by floods from torrential rains which started around 5:30 pm last night.
The almost four-hour downpour left in its wake a disaster of great proportion. Hundreds of lives have been lost; people left homeless; properties and infrastructure destroyed in the wreckage.
The disaster was worsened by a fire outbreak at a Goil filling station at Circle in Accra. The inferno left in its wake charred bodies burnt vehicles and a razed filling station.
Akufo-Addo told the media: "It's a tragedy. Major tragedy for Accra. It's a dark moment in the history of our city," Akufo-Addo said while touring the worst affected areas in Accra.
While commiserating with the families of deceased persons the NPP leader said it is time to examine what happened and see what extent the laws can be enforced to ensure that floods like these do not recur.
"For the time being let's focus on the human tragedy that has occurred. It is a trying moment but it also a time that you have to renew your faith in the Almighty," he said.
"It's sad in the history for Accra," he pointed out.
