The Ghana Police Service has ruled out suggestions that recent gun battles scattered around the country indicate that Ghanaians are losing confidence in the police. Director of Police Public Affairs, DSP Kwesi Ofori rather cites other reasons for the surge in gun violence. "We've been able to contain all kinds of violence we've witnessed in this country," DSP Ofori told Super Morning Show host Kojo Oppong-Nkrumah. DSP Ofori blames the manufacture of offensive weapons by blacksmiths around the country as well as conflicts in Liberia and neighbouring Ivory Coast as major factors. The police spokesperson’s comments come after clashes between armed land guards and residents of Avenor claimed the lives of two persons on Monday morning. A busload of armed men contracted by the Word Miracle Church International allegedly stormed the Avenor area to work on a piece of land that belongs to the church. But on reaching the site, the men are said to have started firing gunshots which sparked a confrontation leading to the death of two while several others were injured, some severely. The police service has described the situation as unfortunate and has promised to launch a full scale investigation into the matter. Already police have started interrogating officials of the church, correspondents say. DSP Ofori said the police service will work hard to retrieve offensive weapons in the system. Security analyst Emmanuel Sowatey however, maintains the rising spate of clashes indeed signifies the police are suffering credibility problems, but said: “The good news is that in the Ghanaian case, the police themselves have realized that they have challenges and they are doing all they can to address the credibility crisis.” Story by Fiifi Koomson/Myjoyonline.com/Ghana
