Ghana maintained her 69th ranking as the most corrupt country out of 180 nations in the world, same as last year.
This is according to the latest Corruption Perception Index released on Tuesday by Transparency International, the global anti-corruption institution.
The country scored 3.9 out of a maximum of 10 and rates the country 7th on the African continent.
Vitus Azeem, Executive Secretary of the Ghana Integrity Initiative, the local chapter of Transparency International in an interview with Joy News’ Stephen Anti blamed Ghana’s stagnant corruption position to failure by governments to implement anti corruption laws in the country.
According to him, the country chalked an impressive score of 3.7 in 2003 after enacting laws against corruption.
The laws he maintained have been left to gather dust on the country’s shelves leading to the prevalent corruption cases.
Mr. Azeem also decried the lack of autonomy given to anti corruption institutions in the country.
He called on government to increase budgetary allocation for the institutions in order to empower them in the fight against corruption.
