Security analyst Dr Kwesi Aning is urging the Defense Minister and the Chief of Defense Staff to expedite action on producing a suspect mentioned in the Mobilla trial for court.
Dr Aning said the authorities must ensure that Private Seth Goka who is said to have escaped while in military custody at the Michel Camp in Accra is arrested and prosecuted as ordered by the court.
Military officials told a jury in Accra, chaired by Justice Senyo Dzamefeh, they could not establish the whereabouts of Private Goka.
But speaking on the Super Morning Show in Accra on Monday, Dr Aning said action must be taken now to bring to book the accused soldier.
Private Goka is on trial with two others - Private Modzaka Eric and Corporal Appiah Yaw – for allegedly murdering former Chairman of the Convention People’s Party (CPP) in the Northern Region, Alhaji Issa Mobilla.
“It creates the uncomfortable feeling that much more has to be done and that people who are accused of such heinous crimes must not be allowed to be walking around,” Dr Aning said.
“Because the particular manner in which this case is dealt with will contribute to – let’s think – political tensions in the north and by extension the whole country. I think it is in the interest of the military and the whole country and those who these gentlemen were released into their custody to find some answers and to find some answers very soon.”
He said the military must ensure it does not loose public trust.
“The last thing we want is for the army to be suspected of not being able to deal with people within its own ranks when they are accused of having committed a particular crime,” he indicated.
Dr Aning also commented on reports that Private Goka has been deployed on a military assignment upon the instruction of national security, saying: “Whoever issued that instruction must answer to the president."
