A district chief executive is accusing some teachers in Wa of defiling students. Seidu Tungbani, Wa West District Chief Executive says the situation has contributed to the abysmal performance of children in the district in the Basic Education Certificate Examination (BECE). Mr Tungbani was speaking at the second ordinary session of the assembly in Wa. In a report by Joy News’ correspondent Rafiq Salam, the district has been faced with many challenges since it was created in 2004. The district registered 49 percent pass in this year’s BECE after a 52-percent score last year. Hopes are well alive and expectations are high that the district will improve substantially in the years ahead in its performance in the basic education examinations. But DCE Tunbgbani believes the abysmal performance of the children over the years must be blamed on some teachers who engage in sexual relations with the pupils. He also alleges that the teachers expose the children to child labour, a situation he describes as uncalled for. “I will not be wrong if I attribute our abysmal performance at the BECE level to the attitude of some teachers towards their profession. This has over the years been on the ascendancy,” said. “Child defilement by some teachers in our communities is of serious concern and I charge the House to come out with by-laws to deal with this menace.” Source: Myjoyonline.com/Ghana
