A four-day training of trainers' workshop on strengthening management and preventive maintenance of schools' infrastructure has been held in Bolgatanga. Participants were drawn from the Ghana Education Service (GES) and the engineering units of district assemblies in the Upper East Region. They were taken through topics including "Management for Efficiency through School Management Committees (SMCs) and Parent-Teacher Associations (PTAs)," "Trust Building", "Community Management Towards Sustained Maintenance of Infrastructure" and "Maintenance Data". Other topics included "Promoting Maintenance Culture", "Analyzing Maintenance Data" and "Valuation Supervision Report". In an address to close the workshop, Mr Afulani Ajene, Projects Officer at the Regional Directorate of Education, said the African Development Bank, which sponsored school projects under the community-based Rural Development Project (CBRDP) had singled out maintenance as a pre-condition for the seven beneficiary districts. Mr Ajene urged participants to impart what they had learnt to the 1,500 school heads and SMC/PTAs in their respective districts to ensure the success of the project. He noted that with effective maintenance school buildings in the area would last for a long time and benefit several generations of students. Source: GNA
