Members of the Industrial and Commercial Workers Union (ICU) will to hit the streets of Tema on Thursday to protest what they say is government’s poor handling of the economy.

The workers say the instability of the cedi coupled with increases in fuel prices in the last few weeks have brought untoward hardship on workers in the country.

The protesters will climax their demonstration with the presentation of a petition to President John Mahama at the Flagstaff House.

General Secretary of the Union Solomon Kotei, told Joy News the industrial and commercial workers have had it with government policies that only make their lives unbearable.

“We are also [protesting] the over-burdening taxes that the Ghanaian worker is paying, and it is on that score that we are going to make a plea to his Excellency the President to grant some reliefs”, he said.

“We are specifically requesting from Government that if we have gotten to a stage that nothing can be done about [the harsh economic conditions], then [it] should turn back to look at workers so that the overtime tax that we pay something is done about it”, he adds.

According to him, Government has deliberately removed policies that hitherto were cushioning workers against economic hardships, a decision he suggests was made at a bad time.

“The previous automatic adjustment formula is also no more in operation. Government has decided to wash off its hands. It tells us obviously that all the subsidies…have been taken away”, the ICU General Secretary observed.

The ICU protest today adds to a tall list of demonstrations by various organisations and workers’ unions against the government in recent times.
