The Mayor of Tamale, Abdul Hanan Gundadow has expressed satisfaction with the progress of construction works on storm drains and roads in some selected communities in the Metropolis under the Ghana Urban management Pilot Project (GUMPP).
The GUMPP projects are ongoing in Moshie-Zongo, Salamba and Tishegu and a retention pond in Gumani to stop the perennial flooding which has over the years led to loss of human lives and destruction of properties in the Tamale metropolis and the Sagnerigu District assembly.
The GUMPP is a Ghana-France collaboration with a loan facility of €40 million through the Agence France de Development (AFD).
Other projects earmarked under the programme include the re-designing and construction of the Aboabo market and Lorry Park, rehabilitation of the Tamale Abattoir at Shishegu and the upgrading of Moshie-Zongo, Salamba and Tishegu Township roads.
Three other cities outside the Northern Region namely: Sekondi-Takoradi, Ho and Kumasi are also benefitting from the facility.
Abdul Hanan Gundadow who toured the construction site in Moshie-Zongo with his team of engineers said he was content with the progress of work done so far.
He however urged the contractors to speed up work on other roads in the selected communities and also cover some of the drains that might pose danger to the residents.
Apart from the construction of good roads and storm drain, street lighting systems will also be installed to give a facelift to these areas.
