A former Accra Hearts of Oak Football Club Chairman, Mr Harry Zakour, was last Saturday elected Chairman of the Korley Klottey Constituency of the National Democratic Congress (NDC) in Accra.
He polled 149 votes to beat his only opponent, Mr Robert Quaye Tetteh, who had 19.
Mr Zakour, who is also a businessman and owner of the Bus Stop Restaurant in Accra, however, noted that although he had entered into mainstream political party activities, that would not affect his lead role in the management of Accra Hearts of Oak.
Asked whether he would seek any national office such as Member of Parliament (MP), he said, "Let me do one thing at a time and I know that by the grace of God things will be okay".
In an election, which was supervised by the Electoral Commission (EC) Officers, led by Ms Hagar Owusu, District officer for Osu Clottey, Mr Randy Kpakpo Fairbanks was also elected as the Vice Chairman.
Others officers elected include Mr Maxwell Lartey Mingle, Organiser, Mr Mash Turkson, Secretary, Mr George Yeboah, Treasurer, Mrs Berlinda Yakah, Women Organiser and Mr Charles Gben, Youth Organiser.
Speaking to the Daily Graphic after he and other officers had been sworn in, Mr Zakour, who said he had been an active but underground NDC member since its inception, promised to change the face of politics, as well as seek the welfare of the people.
According to him, politics should be seen and practised like any other sporting discipline, where winners did not see their opponents as sworn enemies, but one people supporting different teams.
He said although he was a staunch member of the NDC, that had not affected his relations with leading members of the New Patriotic Party (NPP) like Fonner President J. A. Kufuor, his Vice Alhaji Aliu Mahama, and 2008 NPP Presidential candidate, Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo.
He said if all Ghanaians would appreciate party politics in this light, there would be less clashes and insults while more energy and resources would be concentrated on providing for the welfare of the people, especially in the area of health, education, housing and employment.
This, he said, would take the youth off the streets, as well as from bad company which influenced them to get involved in anti-social activities such as armed robbery and drug abuse.
Mr Zakour said he had been supporting the party in the constituency and the region for a long time and so asking the delegates to vote for him was not a difficult thing to do.
The Greater Accra Regional Minister, Nii Armah Ashitey, who is also the MP for the Constituency, commended the party members for the peaceful nature of the delegates’ conference.
He said they had given real meaning to the fact that the NDC was a peaceful party and urged those who did not win to support the elected officers for the party to consolidate its gains in the region.
