A former Pro-Vice Chancellor of the University of Cape Coast, Professor Kobina Yankson has appealed to corporate bodies and individuals to support university education. He said all over the world it has now become expensive for governments to single-handedly finance university education. “More than 60 percent of the cost of running the universities in some countries is borne by corporate bodies and individuals,” Prof Yankson said. He was speaking at a function where a company presented furniture to the UCC School of Medical Sciences of which he is the chairman of the implementation committee. Alliance Systems, dealers in furniture in Accra, presented 10 office tables valued at ¢26 million to the UCC. He said the company made the donation at the appropriate time when the country was implementing the National Health Insurance Scheme and needed more medical personnel to promote its success. Presenting the items, Mr Saeed Muhmin, a marketing representative of the company, said the donation formed part of the company's social responsibility. He said the company was influenced to make the donation because of the importance of the medical school as well as the UCC's contribution to the socio-economic development of the nation over the years. The Dean of the school, Professor Harold Amonoo-Kuofi, said the programme of the medical school had been designed along international standards and that the UCC would produce high quality doctors to enhance health care delivery.
