The opposition New Patriotic Party (NPP) is this morning expected to make a strong case for a new voters register ahead of the 2016 general elections.
The party believes the current register is over bloated and does not reflect the true voter population of the country.
Presidential candidate of the party, Nana Akuffo-Addo, his running mate, Dr. Mahamadu Bawumia and leading members of the party are expected to address a news conference to seek the backing of Ghanaians for a new register.
Communications Director of the Party, Nana Akomea tells Joy News they will first meet with the chairman of the Electoral Commission (EC) on their demands before addressing the media.
“Everybody acknowledges that there is something wrong with the register and it can be improved, it is just that how to improve it is where there are one or two different views.
“The NPP believes that the best way to repair it or have a working register for all of us is to just have a new one and we are going to present our basis from our conclusion to the electoral commission and after we’ve don’t this we will present our case to the rest of the country”, he said.
The National Democratic Congress (NDC) has rejected the need for a new register.
Its General Secretary, Johnson Asiedu Nketia, says any attempt to replace the current voters’ register may open the floodgates for the register to be compromised the more.
He argued that the same motivation that led to political parties sponsoring minors to register to vote still exist and compiling a fresh register will only create avenues for more minors to be registered.
But Nana Akomea says the parties must discuss the flaws in the current register to ensure credible election results.
He said once all parties have decided that there is the need for a new register, “the next step is for all the parities to sit and identify the ways in which the register was compromised and then in the new register make sure that those ways are not repeated”.
