The country’s industrial hub, Tema, has only one fire tender. That is in addition to one operated by the Tema Oil Refinery (TOR).
Regional Fire Officer Gilford Tetteh Adams is worried the city may not survive a major fire outbreak.
Tema is home to many manufacturing industries and Mr. Adams says government must immediately provide additional fire tenders to forestall possible disaster in future.
Mr. Tetteh Adams disclosed this in an exclusive interview with Adom Fm’s Kofi Adoma in Tema on Wednesday.
Mr. Adam’s comments follow the fire incident at the Tema Oil Refinery loading point on Tuesday.
Two staff of the company who sustained severe burn injuries have since been confirmed dead.
Meanwhile, government has announced the composition of a technical committee to investigate the fire outbreak at the Tema Oil Refinery (TOR).
The seven-member committee is chaired by a former National Security Coordinator Mr. K. B. Quantson.
A statement issued by the Energy Ministry, expressed government’s condolence to the family of the persons killed in the fire.
The committee’s terms of reference include determining the immediate and remote causes of the fire; ascertaining the extent of damage; evaluating the appropriateness of existing security and safety measures before the fire.
It will make recommendations on how to avoid a recurrence.
