Veteran journalist Kweku Baako says tribalising a public debate on the authenticity of Ghana’s voter’s register betrays the ruling National Democratic Congress (NDC) as an intellectual impotent party.
He says the NDC General Secretary Johnson Aseidu Nketia is trying to discredit the New Patriotic Party’s evidence of a bloated register in the Volta region by pitching the NPP as being against Ewes.
Volta region is the electoral stronghold of the ruling party where Ewes are an overwhelming majority.
General Mosquito as the politician is popularly called, said the NPP had launched a “fraudulent” and “a gratuitous attack on the people of the Volta region”.
He said this after the opposition party presented evidence of 76,000 foreign names on the biometric voter's register which also included three constituencies in the Volta region.
“Why are you settling on the indigenes of the Volta region. They should come and explain it to us”, Asiedu Nketia demanded barely 24 hours after the NPP made the claim.

But the Managing editor of the New Crusading Guide newspaper Kweku Baako said Asiedu Nketia’s comment “smacks of a certain deep seated intellectual impotence”.
Digging into history, Kweku Baako Jnr said the late President Prof. Atta Mills while the 2008 NDC flagbearer also targeted 13 constituencies in the stronghold of the NPP, the Ashanti region. He had alleged that these NPP-held constituencies had an excess of about 618,000 voters on the register.
“Was he [President Mills] talking anti-Ashanti?” Baako contrasted on Multi TV and Joy FM’s Newsfile Saturday.
The veteran journalist said these issues were raised by the then flagbearer and Asiedu Nketia, and was interrogated by the Electoral Commission.
The claim was found to be false.
Mr. Baako said the NDC wants to “seek refuge in inflaming ethnic passion” because the party is too “weak” to discuss matters intellectually.

If the debate on the authenticity of the voter's register becomes tribally charged, the tensions will destroy the country, he said.
“Then nobody thinks. It is only emotions that drive the discussion,” Baako fears.
In Kweku Baako's view, the General Secretary had exercised bad judgment when he criticized the NPP for showing what he claims is a “disrespect and disdain for certain tribes.”
Kweku Baako says he would wait for further evidence before taking a position on NPP’s call for a new register.
He however made some preliminary observations of NPP’s findings.
“What I have seen appears authentic but I am not an authority”, he said.
