Employment and Labour Relations Minister, Haruna Iddrisu has urged members of the Ghana Medical Association (GMA) to take into consideration the constraints of the economy as negotiations for their conditions of service begin.

The doctors had been on a three-week strike to demand codified conditions of service.

They said they were willing to resign en masse if government failed to provide them with the signed document.

However, after pleas from eminent leaders like former heads of state, the national house of chiefs and the clergy, the GMA has called off the strike.

Deputy General Secretary of the GMA, Dr Justice Yanskon says although the doctors have resumed work, they are doing so with trepidation.

He said until they have in their hands a signed document concerning their conditions of service, it is not over.

Speaking to Joy News' Fred Smith, the Minister said “I expect that the negotiations will be guided by give and take and a win-win for both parties but what is important is for them to appreciate the constraints of the economy with respect to what we are able to give them and what we are not”.

In spite of this, Mr Iddrisu said government remains committed to the principles of giving the doctors codified conditions of service.

Meanwhile, checks across the country by Joy News correspondents indicates that doctors at the public hospitals have reported to work are attending to patients.
