Officials of the Kwame Nkrumah University of Science and Technology (KNUST) say they are surprised by news a graduate of the university intends to join terrorist group, Islamic State (IS).
University Relations Officer of KNUST, Vincent Ankamah-Lomotey, told Joy FM Wednesday that the school is worried about the news.
“It is a big surprise and worrying because this is not what we trained him to do”, he told News Night on Joy FM.
Nazir Nortei Alema, the KNUST graduate, is reported to have sent a message to his family informing them about his decision to join the terrorist group.
Nazir had just completed a one-year National Service programme with the Ghana Statistical Service.

The message sent by the 25-year old graduate to his parents is believed to be the same template that the terrorist group uses for new recruits across the world.
Students at the KNUST campus fear there could be a secret camp of the terrorist group on the campus that admits and recruits students.

However, Mr Lomotey revealed there are "underground works" between the Ashanti Region based university and national security to find out if such secret recruiting group exists on campus.
A security expert has, meanwhile, advised against sensationalizing news of Nazir’s intent to join IS.
Chukwu Emeka Eze of the West Africa Network for Peacebuilding (WANEP), told News Night anchors, Evans Mensah and Dzifa Bampoh that comments on the matter have been hasty.
He explains that Nazir may not even have joined the jihadist group.
“We must not make too much noise because it might jeopardise investigation” by the police and Interpol, according to the security expert.
He said, “alarmist” comments about the issue in the media could increase the anxiety of KNUST students and fuel the desire for the students to join other insurgent groups.
“Sensitivity and consciousness must be the watchword”, he admonished.
