A team of conflict resolution experts has been dispatched on a nationwide tour to identify and resolve all conflicts within the National Youth Employment Program (NYEP).
The team will start its work at the district level, meeting officers of the NYEP and local communities.
Some supporters of the ruling National Democratic Congress (NDC) have been demanding the replacement of local co-ordinators of the NYEP and in some instances clashed with them.
In the latest incident, NDC youth in Tema West allegedly assaulted a staff of the NYEP.
National Coordinator of the NYEP, Abuga Pele condemned the incident, explaining, “there are so many youth out there seeking to come on the programme (NYEP).
“If we are able to assure them that there are enough forms [and] there are many many places for many more of the youth, I think that we can bring down the rising trend of conflict,” he indicated.
The NYEP programme launched by former President Kufuor is making frantic efforts to alleviate unemployment, especially among the youth in the country. To this end, the government, through the Ministry of Youth and Sports, has rolled-out the 2010 NYEP for a massive recruitment drive to further rope in more unemployed youth into the programme.
The programme is expected to benefit more than 200,000 youth between 2010 and 2011. The youth will be recruited into modules such as the Youth in Security Services, comprising community protection assistants, fire safety and prevention assistants, immigration service assistants, and prison service assistants.
The Community Education Teaching Assistants; Youth in Agriculture Business, Youth in ICT; Youth in Paid Internship and Vacation Jobs; Youth in Afforestation; and Youth in Trades and Vocation are some of the modules.
Launching the 2010 NYEP Recruitment Drive under the theme: "Hope for the youth-towards a better Ghana", the Minister of Youth and Sports, Mr. Rashid Pelpuo emphasized that "all these modules are being implemented with the collaborative efforts of all stakeholders, including governmental and non-governmental organizations committed to youth development, employment creation, and poverty reduction".
