One of four persons who were shot in a chaotic demolition exercise in Kasoa yesterday has died.
Michael Darko was hit in the head by a stray bullet when uniformed military personnel fired warning shots to disperse residents resisting a demolition exercise at Kasoa Millennium City on Thursday.
The 32-year-old man is survived by a wife and two kids.
Three victims of the shootings were treated and one discharged yesterday but Michael Darko went into coma after losing a lot of blood from the gunshot wounds. They were admitted at the Korle Bu Teaching Hospital.
ASP Christopher Darkey, Millennium City District Police Commander, confirmed to Joy News the fourth victim died Friday morning.
According to Joy News’ Dereck Ekow Sam, who was at the scene when the incident happened yesterday, the deceased was not one of those protesting against the presence of the military.
He told myjoyonline.com that the deceased was providing him (Sam) with protection when the situation got violent and was shot in the process.
He narrated that together with Darko and some residents, they were running away from the gun-wielding soldiers when he suddenly fell behind them.
It was discovered later that he had been shot with blood oozing from the back of his head.
Unfortunately, Michael Darko succumbed to the gun wound Friday morning.
The soldiers accuse the residents of encroaching on lands they bought from real estate company, 21st Century Construction Limited. They stormed the area Thursday afternoon and demolished properties.
The residents insist the land belongs to them and confronted the soldiers leading to violence.
