The Mother of All Nations Foundation, a community based NGO in Madina has established a Read Camp initiative to help children improve on their reading and writing skills. The initiative was set up as part of efforts to inculcate the habit of reading and writing in young people.
The week long initiative which took off on Tuesday 25th August 2015 and ended on the 2nd of September 2015 engaged over 150 participants from various communities in and around Madina . The participants were taken through fundamentals in reading which included phonetics, spelling, and essay writing skills. Participants were also, tasked to read various story books and write short stories from what they had read.
The initiative aims to spark the interest of reading among youths, which will enhance their reading and writing skills and will go a long way to reflect in their academic works. It also seeks to broaden their minds in order to enhance their thinking and analytical skills.
The maiden edition of the project cost over GH¢ 6,000. Participants were provided meals, accommodation and free health screening. This was to enable participants concentrate and fully benefit from the program for maximum results.
Director of the foundation Mr Zico Abubakar Ishaq Newton said in an interview that even though the project was budgeted for only forty people the turnout was almost four times the number which is an indication that young people themselves recognize the need for change but lack platforms they can take advantage of to improve their lives.
He further stated that the project will be organised twice every year and will be extended to various communities beyond Madina – Zongo to improve on the educational standards of young people in those communities
