Former Black Queens player Mercy Tagoe-Quarcoo has praised the Queens for winning Gold at the just ended All Africa Games in Congo Brazzaville.
The Queens put up an impressive performance with striker Portia Boakye scoring Ghana’s only goal against Cameroon in the final to bag gold.
Tagoe-Quarcoo, a member of the Black Queens team that qualified Ghana to its first appearance at a Women's World Cup in 1999, recognizes how big this latest feat is - especially as it is the ladies' first ever gold medal at the All Africa Games.
Now assistant coach for men's Division One side Amidaus Professionals, she exuded excitement in her interview with Adom Sports.
“[The Queens] played good football especially in the second half. And I was not surprised they scored within the regulation time to kill the game."
Cameroon have, in recent times, become Ghana's bogey side and the victory was an emphatic statement of superiority over the Lionesses. The Central Africans had, in August, denied Ghana a place in the 2016 Olympics after a two-legged victory over the Queens.
“And the players did a good job with determination and I am happy. Of course, in every game we can do better but the most important thing is to continue in the atmosphere and the spirit they played in the All Africa Games”.
Tagoe-Quarcoo is a former FIFA referee who retired in 2012 to concentrate on coaching.
