Mahama courts support for embattled judiciary

President John Mahama has appealed to Ghanaians not to lose confidence in the judicial system following the bribery scandal that has rocked the judiciary.

About 34 high and lower courts judges who are implicated in the investigative piece by journalist Anas Aremeyaw Anas are challenging the legality of the audio-visual recordings showing them allegedly receiving bribes.

Tuesday, September 29, 2015, the High Court threw out a writ by 14 lower court judges who were seeking to stop a committee set up to probe the scandal from sitting.

Following the dismissals of the writs, Joy News has learnt that the committee is sitting today.

Making his first public comments on the scandal, President Mahama on his Facebook page on Wednesday, reiterated his belief in the rule of law and the ongoing investigations.

"What we uncovered these days is that some people, judges, judicial officers and policemen, seemed to be willing to transgress the principles of a fair justice, to their own interest.

"Such persons should be subjected to what they, perhaps, denied others: a fair investigation and a fair trial. Sometimes the principles are to be re-learned the hard way, because justice should always be served.

"We must also understand that this is a problem of some people who may or may not be guilty: it’s for the investigators and the judges to decide.

"However, this is not a problem of our judicial system as a whole. This is not something to make us lose our faith in the judicial system. On the contrary, the investigations that began these days prove beyond doubt that our justice system is intact and working, served by many people with integrity and determination.

"I urge every one of you to keep faith in the system. Justice will always prevail!
