The Judicial Council has been urged to consider the setting up of maintenance fund to maintain the country’s courts.
The call follows the commissioning of a new court complex in Accra on Saturday by President John Mahama.
There are fears the beautiful edifice may end up in a horrible condition just like some other courts in the country as a result of lack of maintenance.
Legal Practitioner Egbert Faibille Jnr said the country has a problem with maintenance but this 50 million dollar edifice should not be allowed to end up like the other courts.
“You’ll realise that [at] the old High, Commercial and Human Rights Court Complex, the air conditioners broke down and they were not promptly replaced or maintained and so you go to court in robes, gowns and all and there’s fiery heat...so unbearable.
“Now that we have been able to do this I will plead with the Judicial Council that looking at this edifice and all this fixes and fixtures, they should negotiate with government and get it to increase the percent of the Internally Generated Fund that can be retained by the judiciary”, he continued.
The increment if allowed should be put into a maintenance fund not be mixed with any other fund so that immediately there are problems with the building, it is immediately fixed, Mr Faibille stressed.
This however should not be done in neglect of the other court complexes across the country, he said.
